EVALUATION OF RESEARCH PERFORMANCE IN INDIAN CSIR CHEMICAL SCIENCES LABORATORIES THROUGH SCIENTOMETRIC INDICATORS

Area: Department of library & information science
Abstract: This study presents a comprehensive scientometric analysis of research productivity across six major Chemical Sciences Laboratories operating under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in India, spanning a decade-long period from 2013 to 2022. Using data retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, the study examines 51,018 publications generated collectively by CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), CSIR-Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI), CSIR-Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI), CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), and CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT). The analysis employs bibliometric indicators including publication growth rate, citation impact, relative citation index (RCI), h-index, journal impact factor distribution, subject-wise output, and international collaboration patterns. Results indicate a consistent annual growth rate of 5.5% in publication output, with CSIR-NCL leading productivity with 15,152 papers and an h-index of 142. International collaboration averaged 22.8% across all laboratories, with the United States being the dominant partner. The findings reveal significant disparities in citation impact and collaboration intensity among laboratories, reflecting differential levels of resource allocation, research focus, and infrastructure. This study provides empirically grounded insights for science policy formulation, institutional benchmarking, and strategic research planning within India's premier scientific research ecosystem.
